Rock Hill, S.C.– The Winthrop University 2019 men’s and women’s cross country seasons open on Friday, August 30th at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, SC.
Who to Watch For
Senior Harper Henson is returning for her final season for the Eagles. In her junior campaign, Henson finished the fall in the top 25 in all four races. Henson’s best time in a 5K race was at the USC Upstate Invitational (18:52.3) and she finished her season at the NCAA Southeast Regionals at the Winthrop Farm. Olivia Esselman is anticipated to have a breakout season after missing a majority of the 2018 season due to injury. She ended her freshman season with a 19:22.5 at the Upstate Invitational. Jasmine Smith is also expected to have a successful sophomore season after making great strides this off season.
Since last season, Coach Paxton has added four incoming freshman that are expected to make a significant impact in their debut season. Kaytlyn Sweatman, Addison Osteen, Kate Weber, and Sidney Jenkins will run for the Eagles this season.
Senior Theo Kahler, sophomore Will Metcalf-Shull, and senior, Blair Bijeau are expected to be top runners for the men’s team. Nicholas Garrett and Marvin Brooks are the two newcomers to the men’s cross-country roster.
Metcalf-Shull ran a career best at the USC Upstate Invitational (27:34) and finished his season at the NCAA Southeast Regionals. Bijeau ended last season at the Big South championship meet with a time of 29:34.2.
Big South Preseason Polls
The women’s and men’s cross-country team have both been picked to finish seventh in the 2019 Big South Conference preseason poll the conference office announced.
Campbell was voted the favorite to capture the men’s title in the Big South championship, while High Point is taking the lead for the women’s cross-country. The full list can be found below.
